Sildenafil citrate is a selective 5-phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which enhances nitric oxide dependence and pulmonary vasodilation mediated by cyclic guanosine phosphate by inhibiting the breakdown of guanosine phosphate. In addition to the direct dilation of pulmonary blood vessels, it can also prevent or reverse vascular remodeling.
